Straight razor use and maintenance

1. Moisten face with lukewarm water and lather up well with shaving soap
2. Hold razor firmly between thumb and 3 fingers
3. Hold the razor at a 30 degree angle to the skin
4. Press the razor lightly on the skin and shave with the grain of the beard hairs
5. Keep tension on the skin with your other hand whilst shaving.
6. Shave with a gentle, even motion, never in a hurry.
7. After shaving, use your favorite aftershave to maintain your skin
8. After shaving, clean and dry the blade well so it does not rust
9. Sharpen the razor regularly with the razor strop. Preferably before and after each shave, that way the razor will stay sharp the longest.
10. Keep your straight razor in its pouch and grease it with our specially formulated Brent Berkeley maintenance oil when it is not in use for an extended period of time.

Please note that our razors are razor sharp! Use them safely and carefully. Start by practicing on the beard and cheeks. Once you have mastered this, you can shave other areas.

The safety razor by Brent Berkeley® is the go-to razor for true gentlemen. An elegant, classic design where ancient shaving traditions and modern-day technology have been harmoniously fused together into a single, timeless essential.

The razor is crafted of materials of the highest quality. The dense, bass frame that runs through the entire length of the razor, makes the razor not only incredibly durable, but promotes smooth handling while shaving and ensures a weighty feel to it.

The deep-red handle forms the heart of the razor and is created from a distinct branch of the finest type of sandalwood. Being one of the world’s most elegant and luxurious woods, sandalwood is a type of wood that is worthy of its owner.

The wood has been sanded by hand and finished with a sealing oil. This extends the lifespan of the razor and protects it from water-damage, allowing it to withstand even the roughest shaving conditions.

The head features a polished, mildly rounded, closed comb. This particular shape promotes a smooth, comfortable shaving experience and reduces the chance of accidental cuts, without compromising on shave-quality. Naturally, the head has been laser-engraved with the signature Brent Berkeley wolf logo as an emblem of quality.

With the safety razor of Brent Berkeley, you can start your day in style; anywhere, anytime.

Good

Nice razor knife, only little bit hard to place the blade.

Shaving with an open razor is not as common as with most modern shaving equipment. To make sure that people who buy an open razor from us know how to handle it, Brent Berkeley offers shaving training given by master barber Daniël van der Putten.

Why Choose a Straight Razor?

In today's world of disposable razors and electric shavers, you might wonder why anyone would choose a straight razor. The answer lies in the precision, control, and unbeatable closeness of the shave that only a straight razor can provide. Not to mention, using a straight razor can save you money in the long run, as the initial investment pays off with years of use. Plus, there's something undeniably satisfying about mastering a traditional skill that connects you to the past.

The Finest Mahogany Wood

FAQ: Straight Razor Use and Care

A straight razor is a traditional shaving tool with a single, long blade that folds into its handle. It offers a close, precise shave and requires skill and practice to use effectively.

Shaving with a straight razor involves several steps:

  • Preparation: Soften your beard with warm water and apply a quality shaving cream.
  • First Pass: Hold the razor at a 30-degree angle and use short, controlled strokes, shaving in the direction of hair growth.
  • Second Pass: Reapply shaving cream and shave across or against the grain for a closer shave.
  • Post-Shave: Rinse with cold water, apply aftershave, and moisturize your skin.

To use a straight razor:

  • Hold the Razor: Grip the razor with your dominant hand, placing your thumb on the bottom of the tang and your index and middle fingers on the top.
  • Angle and Pressure: Maintain a 30-degree angle to your skin and use light pressure to avoid cuts.
  • Controlled Movements: Make smooth, short strokes, letting the weight of the razor do the work.

Hold the straight razor with your thumb on the underside of the tang (the small metal extension) and your index and middle fingers on top of the blade’s spine. Your ring finger should rest on the tang's curved part near the pivot point. This grip provides control and stability.

Sharpening a straight razor requires a whetstone:

  • Choose a Grit: Use a fine-grit whetstone (8,000+ grit) for sharpening.
  • Soak the Stone: If using a water stone, soak it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Sharpen: Hold the razor flat against the stone and make smooth, even strokes, ensuring both sides of the blade are sharpened evenly.
  • Finish: After sharpening, strop the razor to polish the edge.

Stropping a straight razor involves:

  • Attach the Strop: Secure the strop at one end, keeping it taut.
  • Place the Razor: Lay the razor flat on the strop with the spine leading.
  • Stropping Motion: Move the razor away from you along the strop, flipping it at the end to do the opposite side, always keeping the spine in contact with the leather.
  • Repeat: Perform about 20-30 passes on each side to maintain a sharp edge.
